No microcontroller is required to run algorithms thereby reducing power consumption, the company said.
The BMA423 is a tri-axis low-g acceleration sensor with digital interfaces that features 12bit digital resolution and embedded intelligence, the BMA423 allows low-noise measurement of accelerations nd senses wrist tilt, tap/double tap. It comes in a package measuring 2mm by 2mm by 0.95mm.
The BMA456 is similar but features 16bit resolution. The superior temperature behaviour of BMA456 facilitate accurate measurements over changing temperature and the reduced height of 0.65 mm is beneficial for wearable devices.
Typical applications for the BMA456 and BMA423 include step counting in wearables such as fitness bands.
The BMA456 provides the highest performance and accuracy of the family, with 16-bit resolution, noise of only 120 μg/√Hz, and a total offset over its lifetime of only 20 mg. Temperature Coefficient of Offset (TCO) is ±0.3 mg/K, ensuring activity tracking remains accurate under all conditions.
The current draw of the step counter is low, typically less than 30microamps, which helps maximize battery life in portable devices.
The BMA456 and BMA423 are due to be available via distributors in August 2017.
