ESD Alliance to be integrated within SEMI

The Electronics System Design Alliance (Redwood, Calif.) is set to become integrated with SEMI, the world's first and largest semiconductor industry trade organization.

The ESD Alliance started out as the EDA Consortium in 1989 with the goal of looking after the interests of players in electronic design automation. The organization changed its name to the Electronic System Design Alliance in March 2016 to reflect expanded scope and new initiatives.

As a SEMI Strategic Association Partner, the ESD Alliance will retain its own governance and lead its overall direction and initiatives while leveraging SEMI’s global resources. With the addition of the ESD Alliance, SEMI adds the product design segment to its oversight of the electronics manufacturing supply chain.

SEMI made a similar move to integrate the MEMS and Sensors Industry Group (MSIG) in 2016 (see MEMS industry group becomes SEMI partner ).

"ESD Alliance members bring key insights to SEMI vertical application platforms such as Smart Transportation, Smart Manufacturing and Smart Data to enhance collaboration and innovation across the collective SEMI membership," said Ajit Manocha, CEO of SEMI, in a statement.

"The semiconductor industry has grown and matured since the EDA Consortium was formed,” said Aart de Geus, co-CEO of Synopsys, in the same statement. "Many of the previously disparate areas within the industry now overlap and it’s obvious we need to address the supply chain from manufacturing all the way through design."

All ESD Alliance member companies, including ARM, Cadence, Mentor and Synopsys, will acquire SEMI membership while maintaining the self-governing rights as a community within SEMI, the statement said.
