IMEC forms fiber-optic sensor startup

September 11, 2018 // By Peter Clarke
Gent University (UGent) and IMEC have announced the formation of Sentea Technology NV, a company intended to commercialize silicon photonic research into sensors for structural health and process monitoring.

The company has raised an initial €1.6 million (about $1.85 million) from Fidimec, Finindus, PMV and QBIC II and the founders.

Sentea sensors will be used to monitor engineering structures continuously for signs of wear or damage as well as to control industrial installations to maximize their efficiency.

"Integrating all optical functions into a single silicon photonics component will allow us to make highly accurate, small and robust fiber optic sensor interrogators," said Karsten Verhaegen, CEO of Sentea, in a statement.
