Cariad commits to open source software

Those who say yes to the “Software-Defined Vehicle” soon face a Herculean task: Not only must countless functions previously implemented as dedicated ECUs be virtualized and transferred to the software level, but the fundamental architectures must also be cast in software. The vehicle manufacturers are thus faced with the alternative of developing everything themselves and thus, to a certain extent, reinventing the wheel – or using the freely available giant library of the open software world as much as possible. Cariad, the Volkswagen Group’s software company, has opted for the latter. The software house joins the open source community Eclipse Foundation and becomes a strategic member of the working group “Software Defined Vehicle” (SDV). For the first time, Cariad will actively collaborate on open source software and publish projects and code itself for further development in the community. Cariad is thus pursuing the goal of developing basic automotive software more efficiently. Together with developers from all over the world, Cariad wants to create open standards for automotive software and innovations.

“Open cooperation with other developers is central to a functioning digital ecosystem: the software-driven car as the most complex mobile device benefits in particular from the cooperation of the open source community. As one of the leading software companies in the automotive sector, we therefore advocate open cooperation and will promote innovations and jointly set standards in automotive basic software within the framework of the Eclipse Foundation. At the same time, we are also increasing our attractiveness as an employer and enabling our developers to make their work more efficient, effective and sustainable,” said Cariad CTO Lynn Longo.

“The Eclipse Foundation welcomes Cariad and its contributions to the Software Defined Vehicle Working Group,” said Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation. “The entire automotive software ecosystem is undergoing rapid and fundamental change. A common platform and tools that the entire industry can both use and co-develop is needed to accelerate this transformation. Eclipse SDV’s vision of a ‘code first’ open source platform for the software-defined vehicle will radically change the way the automotive industry develops automotive software.”

The focus of Cariad’s open source commitment will be on the VW.OS operating system and the VW.AC automotive cloud. For both software environments, Cariad plans to provide individual software components as open source software. These two platforms are of enormous importance for the volume manufacturer Volkswagen and its numerous subsidiaries: they are part of the uniform and scalable software platform on which up to 40 million cars of the Volkswagen Group will be driven by 2030. These are, for example, basic functionalities that enable rapid communication between different components in the vehicle and can be used in a modular fashion within the industry and scaled efficiently.

The company plans to present a first project, which Cariad is releasing for open source development, at the Eclipse Foundation’s “SDV Contributor Day” in Friedrichshafen on June 30. Further projects will follow in the coming months, Cariad announced.
