OLED folding screens will achieve 1.1 percent of the mobile phone market in 2022, according to TrendForce.
Samsung has been a market leader in folding phones, the market researcher said, but as more brands bring out folding phones the penetration rate is expected to rise to 2.5 percent of the market after 2024.
Samsung, Xiaomi and Motorola have all launched folding phones recently. These can be divided into vertical flip-top folding and horizontal folding that can act as small tablets when unfolded.
The vertical folding phones have an inward fold and tight radius of curvature that requires an extra secondary screen. The horizontal folding phones tend to have an outward fold that exposes the screen to the risk of scratches. Although the outward folding radius is larger, the mechanical performance of the module and hinge design is challenging.
The radius for inward folding screens is smaller, which promotes creases and related reliability issues, TrendForce observed.
These folding screens are based on low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO), which can deliver a dynamically adjustable backplane refresh rate without requiring additional components.
