Nordic and customers gain license to Huawei cellular IoT

Fabless wireless chip company Nordic Semiconductor ASA has signed a royalty-bearing component-level license with Huawei Technologies Co. Ltd. for low power wide area (LPWA) cellular IoT standard essential patents (SEPs).

The deal is similar to one made by Nordic with Nokia in January 2022 (see Nordic, Nokia to offer access to essential IoT patents).

This agreement with Huawei is a big step towards harmonizing the cellular IoT industry with fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory (FRAND) SEP licensing. It means that all Nordic nRF91 Series LTE-M and NB-IoT products and Nordic’s customers for the same will be automatically licensed and protected.

“Huawei owns a leading portfolio of LPWA SEPs for LTE-M and NB-IoT, a subset of the 4G standard, which creates great value for IoT,” said Huawei’s head of European intellectual property rights, Zhang Xiaowu, in a statement issued by Nordic.
