Power and mixed-signal chip vendor OnSemi Inc. (Phoenix, Ariz.) is reportedly in the process of selling off a two more 200mm wafer fabs as a part of its restructuring.

Wafer fab broker ATREG Inc. (Seattle, Wash.) announced that the sale of On Semi’s 200mm wafer fab in Pocatello, Idaho to LA Semiconductor had closed. Meanwhile Nikkei Asia reported that a Japanese private equity fund, reportedly called Mercuria Holdings, will buy On Semi’s 200mm wafer fab in Niiagata, Japan.

These sales come on top of thoses at South Portland, Maine (see Diodes to buy onsemi South Portland fab) and Oudenaarde, Belgium (see Belgian wafer fab sold to GaN startup with China connections).

For its 3Q22 OnSemi has reported net profit of US$311.9 million on sales revenue of US$2.19 billion. Sales were up 26 percent year-on-year and up sequentially by 5 percent.

That makes four

The Japanese fund is backed by the Development Bank of Japan and trading house Itochu, Nikkei said, adding that the plant will begin as a foundry performing contract manufacturing of power semiconductors for electric vehicles and appliances in December.

The plant will keep its current headcount of about 600 people but it’s name and how much will be paid to OnSemi was not revealed.

LA Semiconductor is subsidiary of Linear ASICs Inc. (Tallmadge, Ohio) which itself has 25 years of experience providing an ASIC design service with expertise in analog and mixed-signal semiconductors.

LA Semiconductor was founded in 2022 and describes itself as the newest US-owned and operated, pure-play foundry for analog, mixed-signal and power chips with a capability down to 180nm.

Located on a 33-acre campus with over 50,000 square feet of cleanroom space and over 550,000 square feet of building space, the Pocatello fab currently produces 0.35 micron to 1.5 micron analog CMOS, BCD, advanced discrete, and custom technologies.

“This divestment is a continuation of OnSemi’s fab-liter manufacturing strategy aimed at achieving a sustainable financial performance through upscaling capacity for products in our key markets of automotive and industrial,” said Wei-Chung Wang, executive vice president, global manufacturing and operations for OnSemi, in a statement.
