SK Hynix announced the plan to build M16 in July 2018 and broke ground for the shell in December 2018. The clean room was opened to receive wafers in December 2020.

The plant is 336m long, 163m wide and 105m high with a foot print of about 55,000 square meters, equivalent to eight soccer field, and is largest of SK Hynix’ production site. The company has spent KRW 3.5 trillion on the plant so far (about US$3.1 billion). The company did not indicate how much manufacturing capacity the plant has now or is expected to provide in the future.

The company said it plans to produce the 1a-nm generation of DRAM products in 2H21 using extreme ultraviolet lithography.

The fan follows on from M14 opened in 2014 and M15 in Cheongju, South Korea opened in 2018. M16 represents the completion of a plan to build three wafers within a decade three years ahead of schedule.

“M16 shall remain as a symbol not only for the completion of company broad plan, but also for the beginning point of Yongin Semiconductor Cluster,” said SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, at small ceremony held to mark the completion of the fab.

The Yongin Semiconductor Cluster was announced in February 2019 with a plan for a campus of 4.48 million square meters able to house multiple wafer fabs and up to 50 foreign and domestic equipment, materials and parts suppliers. SH Hynix plans to spend 120 trillion won (about $107 billion) to build four wafer fabs there after 2022.

For the calendar year 2020 SK Hynix announced a net profit 4.759 trillion won (about US$4.25 billion) on consolidated revenues of 31.9 trillion won (about US$28.5 billion).
