Sony acquires Swiss vision sensor firm
Insightness AG (Zurich, Switzerland) was founded in 2014 by PhD students as a spin-off from University of Zurich and ETH Zurich. The company has produced its second image sensor, the SiliconEye 2, possibly using Sony as foundry, with an architecture that allows both event-based sparse data capture and traditional high-resolution images on the same pixel grid.
Sony lists Insightness as a subsidiary of Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corp. on it’s corporate profile.
Insightness is pursuing a line of event-based, sparse data capture development similar to that of pioneer Prophesee SA (Paris, France). And notably Sony and Prophesee have a joint paper coming at this year’s International Solid-State Circuits Conference.
Which all suggests that Sony is now taking the event-based vision processor seriously and is about to move on that front commercially.
