TDK backs 60GHz mmWave startup
TDK has invested in US wireless communications startup XCOM Labs to speed up the development of its 60GHz mmWave 5G technology.
XCOM, started by senior engineers from Qualcomm, are looking to boost bandwidth capacity, latency reduction/elimination, and compute load balancing in 5G networks for Industry 4.0. Millimetre wave (mmwave) wireless technologies could enable smart factories, automation, off-site training, and more immersive telework experiences. This extends further to telemedicine, entertainment, and even defence applications to help train and prepare military personnel.
The company is using a globally available 60GHz mmwave band for a high throughput, low latency wireless system for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) optimised for a 5G radio access network. TDK Ventures will work with XCOM to scale the impact of their technology, including leveraging their network connections, industry partners, and connecting XCOM to other TDK business units. TDK Ventures’ platform team additionally provides support to include early product validation, pilots, customer/channel/ecosystem access, market knowledge and operating expertise in materials, manufacturing and the supply chain.
XCOM’s founder Dr. Paul Jacobs is the son of the founder of Qualcomm and was CEO from 2005 to 2014. He set up XCOM in 2018 with Qualcomm’s CTO Mat Grob and president Derek Aberle (all three shown above).
