Bosch is likely to continue to prosper as automotive and industrial applications will drive the global MEMS pressure sensor market over the next several years, according to the market research firm’s data.

The market for MEMS pressure sensors will increase from about $1.6 billion in 2017 to just over $2.0 billion in 2023, experiencing a compound annual growth rate of about 4 percent over the period, Yole said.

Nearly half of that market is in automotive applications and almost a quarter in consumer applications. Then comes industrial followed by medical and then avionics.

Next: Five rankings

However, the competitive landscape varies greatly between the five sectors with completely different top five rankings of vendors. And despite Bosch’s undoubted success in MEMS more generally Honeywell and NXP both appear on three out of the five top five pressure sensor vendor rankings.

Established automotive applications increase MEMS pressure sensors adoption in the integrating systems, and also widespread their geographical adoption especially in China thanks to new automotive regulation. New applications for pressure sensors springing up in consumer include wearables, electronic cigarette and drones.

In terms of technology pressure sensors divide between capacitive sensors and piezoresistive sensors. The two technologies do not differ much in performance but piezoresistive provides a greater range of absolute pressure measurements. Piezoresistive leads the market today and will continue to do so although there is growing adoption of capacitive technology in consumer applications, Yole said.
