MEMS startup ramps microphone production with Tower
GMEMS Technologies Inc. was founded in 2016 and is described on its Linkedin page as a firm of management consultants although the website also states that the core R&D group was established in 2003. The team includes professors from Stanford University and University of California at Davis.
GMEMS, having started in MEMS design services, would now appear to be making the leap to product vendor.
GMEMS claims it is skilled in MEMS design having done contract designs of pressure sensor, accelerometer, optical switch, gas valve, microfluidic chip, microphone and gyroscope. It can also design MEMS-supporting analog and digital ASIC ships. Thirdly the company also claims to be skilled in MEMS packaging and assembly. GMEMS also claims to be leader in voice processing algorithms for voice interface applications.
GMEMS now characterizes itself as a supplier of MEMS sensors to smartphone vendors and has a custom production flow installed on Tower’s 0.18-micron CMOS.
GMEMS has designed MEMS microphones for the earbuds and cellphone markets that it claims are smaller than the competition.
“We are very pleased to have partnered with Tower to enhance the manufacturing capability for our highly demanded microphone products. We chose Tower for its excellent reputation, superior technical capabilities, advanced technology platforms and its capability to manufacture MEMS at large scale due to the compatibility with its CMOS flow,” said Mark Wang, CEO of GMEMS, in a statement.
He added that working with Tower had allowed GMEMS to get to high volume and set a road-map for the development of the next generation of microphones.
GMEMS was founded in 2016 by George Wu, who serves as CTO. The company raised a $7.5 million Series A round in July 2018 from China’s Fortune Venture Capital and two other investors.
