Nowi, Murata partnership allows energy-autonomous LoRa
Dutch energy harvesting pioneer Nowi Energy has formed a strategic partnernship with Murata to develop energy-autonomous LoRa wireless nodes.

Nowi Energy BV (Delft, The Netherlands) is working with Murata to bring to market reference platforms and designs which use Murata’s LoRa modules, powered by Nowi’s energy harvesting PMIC.

The 60mm by 65mm board is designed to provide development space for end users while offering a socket to attach an external sensor. Nowi's NH2 PMIC allows a variety of energy storage media to be charge from a variety of ambient energy sources so that sensor data can be sent via LoRa on an autonomous basis.

Murata is providing the Type 1SJ stand-alone or AT-command controlled LoRaWAN modem measuring only 10.0mm by 8.0mm by 1.6mm. It is based on the second-generation Semtech SX1262 radio frequency IC and Nowi claims this is the smallest LoRa modem available in the world. The device incorporates several low power modes that allow the real-time clock to operate while drawing a typical current of just 1.3microamps. Additionally, the resin mould package provides physical ruggedness with a –40 to +85 degree C temperature range.

A second Murata module is the Type ABZ measuring 12.5mm by 11.6mm by 1.76 mm, constructed in a metal shielded package and comprising a Semtech SX1276 long range spread spectrum wireless transceiver.

Both the modems are integrated with an STM32L0 series ARM Cortex M0+ 32bit microcontroller (MCU) from STMicroelectronics. The MCU includes 192kbytes of flash memory and 20kbytes of RAM.
