With the sixth generation of WiFi technology, NXP says it hopes to usher in a new era of innovation in automotive connectivity. The manufacturer is primarily targeting high-volume applications. In addition to the automotive market, the new chips will be used in a wide range of other applications, including security, mobile, industrial and IoT markets.
Wi-Fi 6 offers several improvements over previous versions, including symmetrical multi-gigabit uploads and downloads, lower latency, higher transmission capacity and better energy efficiency. These technical innovations were previously limited to premium products. With the broad new offering, these benefits are now available for large-scale deployment in numerous markets. A wide range of products can now be equipped with the latest Wi-Fi capabilities, such as
- Up to 4 times better performance
- Greater range
- Improved battery life
- Higher reliability of the connection
Among the new products, there are several that comply with the AEC-Q100 automotive standard, including the 88Q9098 family of automotive wireless SoCs and the 88W9068 family of dual WiFi-6 chipsets, specifically designed for infotainment and telematics applications with the highest performance requirements in cars.
The 88Q9098 family is claimed to be the industry’s first Wi-Fi 6 solution, based on the latest IEEE 802.11ax standards, with 2x2 plus 2x2 concurrent dual Wi-Fi, dual-mode Bluetooth 5/BLE and 802.11p for connected vehicles. Delivering reliable and high-performance wireless connectivity is becoming more difficult in the increasingly congested automobile environment. The 88Q9098 combo solution enables gigabit-level performance, superior reliability, and enhanced security for the car and extends leadership in providing comprehensive Wi-Fi 6 solutions. Our innovative concurrent dual Wi-Fi architecture sets a new technology precedent, integrating two complete Wi-Fi subsystems into a single SoC, and enabling two independent 2x2 data streams to run concurrently and at full throughput.
The 88W9068 provides a comprehensive Wi-Fi 6 feature set including full MU-MIMO and OFDMA uplink and downlink. Drawing on the strength of our proven implicit and explicit beamforming technologies, MU-MIMO and OFDMA help increase capacity in both directions. This allows for overall improved network utilization while meeting the growing demands of user applications.
