SkyWater foundry granted trusted fab status
When under Cypress ownership the facility, known as Fab 4, also enjoyed this status. This accreditation enables SkyWater to provide wafer fabrication, design, wafer test, and broker services to the US government as a trusted supplier.
“The fact that this was accomplished within two weeks of the birth of the company demonstrates the priority SkyWater Technology Foundry has put on this accreditation and in serving the needs of the DoD,” said Michael Moore, executive vice president of sales and marketing at SkyWater, in a statement. “This Accreditation validates our security posture and it demonstrates the continued commitment of this site to serving the microelectronics needs of the U.S. DoD.”
SkyWater supports both low volume, fast turnaround processing and high volume production. It runs manufacturing processes from 0.35-micron down to 90nm and offers turnaround on prototypes of less than half-a-day per mask layer.
Under Cypress the fab was automotive production qualified and had a clean room floor space of 80,000 square feet and was capable of 16,700 wafer starts per month. Cypress had about 450 employees at the Bloomington wafer fab in December 2015. It is not clear whether SkyWater plans to renew its automotive qualifications.
“SkyWater Technology Foundry plans to expand engagements with the U.S. DoD generally, and in particular is poised to meet the requirements of DoD Instruction 5200.44 which requires fabrication of mission-critical custom microelectronics components in a trusted facility,”Moore said in the same statement.
