NFC technology is a key part of contactless payments made using smartphones and ST’s technology includes an NFC controller and optional embedded secure element.

“ST will provide its NFC technology to MediaTek, to deliver high contactless performance solutions to OEMs with a focus on cost and integration optimization through smaller antennas and reduced bill of materials,” said Marie-France Florentin, general manager of ST’s secure microcontroller division, in a statement.

How ST will be paid for its technology was disclosed. One method is for ST to provide its technology as intellectual property cores and be paid an upfront fee plus royalties on each chipset that MediaTek ships that include the cores.

ST has provided customers with NFC and RFID chips for many years and its ST21NFCD is a component that integrates booster technology that ST acquired from AMS in 2016 (see ST buys NFC, RFID assets from AMS).

ST’s latest NFC components are systems-in-package –  the ST54F and ST54H – that comprise the ST21NFCD NFC controller with active load modulation for extended range with ST33G1M2 and ST33J2M0 embedded secure element (eSE), and operating system.
