Text book presents modern analog components
Silicon Analog Components is a 607-page hardback book that covers modern analog components, their characteristics and their dependence on manufacturing process parameters. The subtitle of the book is Device Design, Process Integration, Characterization, and Reliability.

The book is intended for engineers and scientists in semiconductor research, development and manufacturing. The problems at the end of each chapter and the numerous charts, figures and tables also make it appropriate for use as a text in graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in electrical engineering and materials science.

The authors are Badih El-Kareh a consultant and retired IBM and Texas Instruments physicist and Lou Hutter, also formerly of Texas Instruments.

El-Karah has over 40 years' experience in semiconductor device design, process integration and characterization. That includes the development of CMOS and BiCMOS processes for analog, memory, digital and high voltage applications.

As director of the mixed-signal technology development group at TI, Hutter was responsible for all analog, mixed-signal, RF, and power technology development in the company, supporting every major business unit. After retiring from TI in 2007, he became the general manager of the analog foundry business unit at Dongbu HiTek, in South Korea. Hutter's areas of focus have been analog CMOS, high-power BCD technology, power metallization and SiGe BiCMOS.

Hutter is also one of the executives behind a plan to bring an analog/power wafer fab to central India (see Could India's analog wafer fab be moving south?).

Eleven chapters start with a discussion of the world as an analog place and move on through a discussion of properties of monocrystalline silicon, PN junctions and on to bipolar transistors and FETs, analog and RF CMOS, high-voltage and power transistors. The last chapters of the book cover process integration, noise and mismatching of components and reliability.

The book is priced at £135.00 (about €190, or about $210) in hardback form and £108.00 (about €150, or about $170) for the e-book version. Individual chapters can be bought for about £24.00.
