WSTS raises chip market forecast for 2018
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization has raised its forecast for the 2018 chip market and foresees it achieving 12.4 percent annual growth. For 2019 WSTS is forecasting more moderate growth at 4.4 percent to take the global market size to $484 billion.

The numbers - a total market of $463 billion in 2018 and $484 billion in 2019 - were agreed at the Spring 2018 forecast meeting, held May 22 to 24, 2018.

WSTS projects year-to-year increases across all regional markets for 2018: the Americas (14.0 percent), Europe (13.4 percent), Asia Pacific (including China) (12.3 percent), and Japan (8.6 percent). The growth also reflects extraordinary growth in the memory sales category at 26.5 percent year-on-year followed by the analog ICs category at 9.5 percent.

For 2019, all major product categories and regions are forecasted to grow with the overall market up 4.4 percent, with sensors contributing the highest growth followed by optoelectronics and analog ICs.
