AMD surges in fabless chip firm ranking
AMD’s surge was ascribed to the strength of its computing and graphics processors business and demand for processors for cryptocurrency mining. Most other companies increased sales year-on-year although MediaTek and and Novatek showed declines compared with the same period a year before.

Nvidia achieved growth of 50.6 percent and tenth ranked Dialog Semiconductor increased sales by 22.6 percent. However, it is notable that TrendFocus did not include Tsinghua Unigroup in its list. The weakness in the smartphone market in what is now an off-peak season impacted such companies as Qualcomm, MediaTek and Marvell.
Analyst CY Yao said a lack of news about Qualcomm’s next-generation Snapdragon 700 series processors could influence smartphone makers’ development of high-end models this year and possibly push customers towards the P60 from MediaTek.
In 2Q18 the top five in the ranking are expected to remain place but Marvell may have a chance to replace sixth ranked Xilinx. Marvell is due to acquire dataventer processor maker Cavium. Cavium’s revenues have been remained in the range of $220 million to $250 million since 4Q16.
